With the current lifestyles we live, there seems to be no time for meditation. Rather than having no time, it is more of having no patience for it. Learning meditation takes no more than thirty minutes of your time, and you can practice it when you get up in the morning and before you sleep. There are many meditation techniques, but before you go looking for a tutor, here are some tips to get you started in basic meditation.

  1. Have the proper posture. This doesn’t mean that you have to sit in the lotus position or any other back aching position. Just sit with your back straight, and make sure that the rest of your body is comfortable. You could be sitting on a chair, or sitting on the floor, so long as you are comfortable. It is not advisable that you lie down, because you might fall asleep too soon.
  2. Practice deep and even breathing. Once you are properly seated, relax your body every time you inhale and exhale. The goal is to have a constant rhythm going within you. One key in meditation is mindfulness. Be mindful of what your body is going through; be aware of the silence and the rhythm. Once you have gotten used to even breathing for a few sessions, you can try adding calming music and see if it helps you condition your mind better.
  3. Clear your mind. Do not think. but then you’re thinking of not thinking. It’s not easy to do this at first, but constant practice helps you get used to it. You have to focus on one aspect alone to get your mind not to think of anything. Focusing on your even breathing is one example. Another example would be to have a lighted candle in front of you and focus on its depths. It is the same with clearing your mind. You are focusing to reach the depths of your soul, beyond the clutter that always surrounds your daily life. Try to also read about the different chakra points of the body and understand the purpose of each one. With each inhale and exhale, see if you can feel your chakra points one by one, as part of your practice on focus.
  4. Gradually increase your meditation time or days. It is understandable that you won’t be able to stay long in the meditative state at first, but as you continue, challenge yourself by increasing your meditation time. It gets easier as you go along, and you will notice the improvements in your concentration in your tasks throughout the day.

Meditation is returning to the core of your being. For some it can be associated with prayer, of calling God to guide you. Going into yourself in meditation anchors you to the wishes and purpose of your soul in this life, and constant meditation can be the beginning of a constant reminder to keep you focused in your daily life. Relax, feel the world unwind before you in your silence.
