Mold can be anywhere, inside or outside, lingering in places we never think of.  Unfortunately the almost universal presence of mold can be very dangerous and irritating to those who suffer from mold allergies.  Taking preventative measures and knowing what to do when there is mold can greatly reduce the suffering of living with an allergy to mold.

The primary, and most obvious, step to keeping mold out of the home is through regular cleaning.  This will ensure that mold does not have a chance to grow in most areas.  Focus on hard-to-reach places when cleaning, even if this means moving appliances and furniture.  Mold likes to grow in areas that are usually skipped in day-to-day cleaning.  Clean especially well in places where water might seep through and rest.

Mold loves moist, humid conditions.  Cleaning areas where water could be present can prevent mold if the area remains dry, but high humidity levels will allow mold to grow no matter what you do.  Mold has a rough time growing in humidity levels less than 40% so you can buy a dehumidifier to control moisture in the home.  A few dehumidifiers may be necessary, especially if the house is large, or if it is a multi-level home.

Since we already know that mold loves a moist environment, it is very important to never put away anything that is wet or damp.  Examples of this include putting away wet dishes, not allowing clothes to completely dry, having wet rags laying around after doing the dishes or cleaning, not drying a carpet or rug all the way after being washed or having water dropped on it, and not regularly washing or properly hanging wet bathroom towels.

For those suffering with mold allergies, battling mold can very easily seem like a losing fight.  Daily inspection and maintenance can greatly reduce the likelihood of having a mold problem.  If you cannot properly control mold in your home, or if you're doing everything possible but still suffering, call a mold expert.  Professionals are available that can properly rid your home of mold, but in most cases are not needed as long as the problem is not ignored for too long and as long as the proper steps are taken to address the mold problem.
