Cognitive behavioral therapy is a psychological treatment used to cure anxiety disorders as well as depression. It is solely based on learning principles. Behavioral therapy is used to lessen a patient's unwanted reactions, feelings, and thoughts. Behavioral therapy aims to divert unwanted behaviors to better behaviors.

Some people find it difficult to manage stress in their lives. If you are one of those people who are having problems in coping with the problems in your life, counseling will be the most useful method for you. Here are the techniques used in behavioral counseling:

  1. Psychotherapy. This is one of the most widely used techniques in addressing depression. Through this therapy, mental health providers try to determine the reasons and the possible results of depression. The health provider takes into consideration the following factors in the patient’s life: medical problems, family orientation, dreams, and social economic status. During psychotherapy, therapists use the following techniques: arts such as song and dance, meditation, and role-playing to help you know yourself better.
  2. Psychoanalysis. Under the tree of neuroscience is psychoanalysis. It is based on Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. In his theory, he uses dream analysis and psychoanalytic associations to assess the patient’s mental state. Psychoanalysis uses the method of interviewing to gain more data from the patient. The interview may seem a normal talk with the therapist. This is done to prevent the generation of anxiety from the patient. Some psychoanalytic therapists also use literary texts to make their patients more comfortable during the interview. Still, the technique to be used by the therapists depends on the patient’s needs and interests.
  3. Exposure Therapy. In this kind of therapy, the patient is exposed to the situations or to the things that cause depression or anxiety attacks. The aim of this therapy is to prepare the patient in facing depression. Through this therapy, patients will be set to have clearer thinking and to generate good decisions. Exposure therapy will also enable the patient to make associations between his past “awful experience” and his “newly learned exposure”.
  4. Biofeedback. In this technique, the therapist monitors muscle tension and heart rate. These data are recorded, analyzed, and explained to the patient. Through this therapy, the patient will be able to personally handle and monitor his bodily functions. According to therapists, being able to monitor one’s own bodily functions will decrease the chance of suffering depression and anxiety disorders.
  5. Activation. Behavioral activation is also a technique used to cure depression. In the activation technique, the patient is required to list all the activities that he is fond of doing, and that itself makes him happy. After giving the list to the therapist, the patient will then be asked to perform the activities in an organized procedure. During the process, the patient will be receiving positive reinforcements for activities that he has accomplished. These accomplishments and reinforcements will gradually help him overcome his depression.

Now that you know the techniques used in cognitive behavioral therapies, you might see that you have numerous options for counselors. You may seek the help of psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, or counselors. They are trained to help you in your problem. Do not worry because they are trained to keep their clients’ data in confidence.
