How To Prevent Colitis

Colitis, medically acknowledged as ulcerative colitis, is a condition that pertains to the formation of ulcers along the stomach and intestinal linings. Sometimes, ulcers are formed because of the exposure of the intestinal lining to gastric acids from the stomach; other times, ulcerative colitis can be caused by bacteria from undercooked food or food that has not been prepared well. There are no known particular causes of ulcerative colitis; therefore there are no surefire ways of preventing it. However, you can do something about preventing it from progressing or abating its growth and aggravation. Here are some ways to help you make sure that your ulcerative colitis is kept in check and no new ulcers will develop:

  1. Eat a healthy diet. In any type of disease or condition, nothing beats eating a healthy diet to fortify your immune system. Load up your plate with fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins and minerals, because they will be your guard whenever you are afflicted with a disease. Try and stay away from junk food for a while. You’ll not only be protected from harmful diseases, you can get a good-looking body as well.
  2. Take medication. Most ulcerative cases cannot be prevented, but there are ways to reduce the pain or the severity of the condition. One thing your doctor may advise you to do is to take anti-inflammatory medications to prevent the flaring up of the ulcers. More often than not, you’ll be prescribed medication since over-the-counter solutions are just too weak to combat colitis.
  3. Eat less spicy foods. Spicy foods often contain substances that irritate the ulcers in the lining of your intestines, and would sometimes cause new ulcers to form. Eat less of these spicy foods to stop the inflammation of these ulcers.
  4. Stay away from antibiotics. Most antibiotics are known to aggravate cases of ulcerative colitis because they induce inflammation. If possible, never take antibiotics when you discover that you suffer from ulcerative colitis. Opt for other medications instead, such as natural or oriental drugs that don’t contain harmful substances.
  5. Make sure to eat at proper times. It is believed that most ulcers are caused by not eating on time, or when you let your hunger pass. If you feel that it’s time to eat and your stomach calls for it, make sure to eat even a sandwich or a cookie to keep stomach acids from burning or damaging the lining of your stomach and even intestines.

Remember, there are no known causes of colitis. But most of the time, symptoms such as stomach pain and irregular bowel movements manifest, and you can do a lot of things to treat these areas of concern. Consult with your doctor immediately upon learning that you have colitis, because he will be the one who is knowledgeable enough to advice you about the things that you can do to help keep your condition in check.
