Anorexia is a sickness that has afflicted mostly teens and women. It greatly affects a person’s physical, mental and psychological perception in life. People who have this disease go on an extreme diet by not eating, thinking that they are excessively overweight when in fact they are dangerously thin.

Anorexia nervosa patients with any other eating disorders like bulimia (the person eats a lot or goes on a binge then feels severely ashamed) have problems with their sense of self. It might save a life if you know how to recognize if a person is showing mental or emotional signs of having anorexia. Some tips will be seen below.

  • Distorted perception of self – When she always asks you if she gained weight and then always looks at the mirror and says she is too fat when she is 5 feet 4 inches tall weighing 100 lbs. She sees her body image as an embarrassment to herself and to others.
  • Obsessive compulsive behavior – She looks at you like crazy when you forget to do one of the five things she told you. She likes everything perfectly done to the extent that she experiences extreme anger when what she wants has not been followed to the letter. She exercises too much thinking that this is what is required of her.
  • Poor judgment – When a person you know as someone who is a pro at making decisions logically and suddenly starts to decide wrongly over the smallest of things then this could be an indication.
  • Insomnia – She couldn’t sleep. She is obsessing about what she needs to do to lose that excess weight she pictures in her mind.
  • Irritability – She flinches at a touch with annoyance. She easily gets impatient about being asked to say or do things. She was not like this before. She gets upset by the most trivial matters.
  • Depression – Someone who starts to keep to herself; sulks, cries and wants to be alone without you knowing the reason why. When she eats, she feels guilty afterwards like she was bulimic. This should send you an immediate signal that something is terribly wrong.
  • Lack of concentration – She cannot seem to focus on a certain task for long. She looks far away and drifts to a place you cannot reach. She forgets where she is for the moment and then loses interest altogether in whatever she was doing.
  • Being forgetful – She misses out on a lot of things she should have brought to a place or she keeps on losing items she normally would have known where to put. This does not happen once but happens several times in the course of a week so that it becomes alarming.
  • Being out of control – She is someone who seems to be at a loss on what she is supposed to do. Not showing up for work, acting irrationally and doing all sorts of surprising things you would never have thought she would do. Stories of people who have lost their way are sometimes people who had weight problems.

Anorexia is not something you should just ignore. It is a very serious disease. It could even lead to death. It should be nipped in the bud. If you recognize someone with these signs as above, make sure to observe a bit more and try to see if that someone is someone you can save.
