A wheelchair is very useful and helpful equipment, something that most of us will use at one point or another in our lives, either for ourselves or for our loved ones. That being the case, it is important that we know how to rent a wheelchair.
- First, consider for what purpose you're going to use the wheelchair. Note that a wheelchair that can be used at home may not have what is required for outdoor use. An all-terrain wheelchair is needed for camping trips and trail adventures out in the wild.
- Think of who will be using the wheelchair. If the person is handicapped, then you should rent a wheelchair that can cater to his needs. If you are not sure what the user needs, you can simply ask the wheelchair rental company for help. The personnel there will probably ask you to fill out a questionnaire on the specifications you need. They might ask you details about the person's physical condition, height, weight and preferences. Thus, you must also ask the person who is using it for his preferences. Do not assume you know what he wants and needs.
- If the user cannot handle a manual wheelchair or there is no one who can push the wheelchair around all the time, it would be best to get a mobility scooter or an electric scooter. You can look at the Yellow Pages and look for scooter providers, or you can visit their web sites. An example of a rental company providing scooters is Scoot around. They can take your order online and have it delivered where you need it. They also have manual wheelchairs.
- Ask the rental company to provide a cushion that is comfortable and appropriate for the model of the wheelchair you are renting.
- When you get the wheelchair or when it is delivered to you, make sure that all the necessary parts are intact. Go over the wheelchair with a representative from the rental company, and have him point out the dimensions and the specifics you asked for.
- Have everything on paper. You and the rental company should sign the necessary receipts and guarantees. You need to know what the rental company could be liable for, in case there are accidents.
- Ask the rental company if there are special instructions regarding the wheelchair. Be aware of its limitations. You don't want to break it and pay additional charges. Worse, there might be accidents if you don't follow these instructions.
- If you were renting a wheelchair for a vacation, it would be better if you call your destination hotel or resort and inquire if they have wheelchair rentals. A wheelchair is very heavy and bulky, and takes up a lot of luggage space, so it would be better if you don't have to bring it around the country.
Take good care of the wheelchair. Return it on time and to the designated place. Make sure you get a written receipt for its return.
