Having a sore throat is never easy - it makes it difficult to talk, eat and even drink. There are a few tricks and products you can try to take away some of the discomfort though. Consider these suggestions on how to soothe a sore throat.
Gargle with salt water. It doesn't taste the best, but one remedy that works to soothe a sore throat is salt water. You don't have to drink it - just gargle with it for 30 seconds and then spit it out. Do this a couple times a day to provide relief to your aching throat.
Mouthwash works, too. If you can't stand the thought of pouring salt water into your mouth, you can also gargle with mouthwash. It has the same disinfecting and healing qualities that salt does, and you just might like the taste a bit better. Once in the morning and once in the evening should be sufficient. Just ensure that you aren't drinking straight from the bottle if it is shared with anyone else, or you might spread your sore throat to them.
Drink something hot. A time-honored remedy for healing a sore throat is slowly sipping a hot beverage. Try drinking a coffee, some tea, some hot chocolate or even some Neocitrin (lemon drink mix for colds). You'll be amazed at how much better your throat will feel after a hot drink, even if it is only temporary. The heat from the beverage coats the areas of your throat that are inflamed. Since you can't add a hot pack to your throat, a hot drink serves the same purpose of soothing your sore throat.
Try some medication. There are countless medications out there that claim to soothe sore throats. All vary in strength and effectiveness. You can look for a medicated throat lozenge that will numb your throat and work to heal it. Or you might consider using a throat spray like Chloraseptic, which has the same effect. Your family doctor should also be able to recommend some over-the-counter medications, as well as some prescription medications, that should help to soothe your sore throat.
Go for something sweet. Anyone with a sweet tooth will love this sore throat remedy! A spoonful of honey has amazing soothing qualities. Get some liquid honey and swallow it down, just like you would with cough syrup. It will coat your sore throat and it tastes good too! You might get some relief by sucking on a hard candy too. It will help to keep your throat moist which will provide you with some relief from your sore throat.
Steam your face. Steam, like a hot beverage, adds just the right amount of heat and moisture to your sore throat. Boil some water on the stove until it is steaming. Then remove it from the stove, place it on a table and with your head over the steaming pot, cover your head and the pot in a towel to capture the steam. Inhale the steam through your nose and down into your throat and you should notice immediate soothing relief for your sore throat.
