How To Treat Impacted Stools

Impacted stools or impacted bowel is a serious malady and one that you should call your doctor about right away.  It will probably be necessary to actually visit the doctor so that he can advise you on the proper course of treatment.  If the condition continues without medical treatment, it can get so serious that you will have to have surgery to correct the situation; it can even be fatal. Our bodies are made in such a way that everyone and every living thing has to poop at some kind of interval - it is absolutely necessary for our metabolism. If you don't eliminate regularly, you are headed for trouble.

Short-term care

Sometimes older people develop impacted stools from the medications they are taking. They may not be able to stop taking the medications, but there are several things they can do to help their bowels pass the stools. The first is to drink plenty of water. Dehydration is a cousin to impacted bowels and will actually cause the bowels to not work the way they are supposed to.

The best over-the-counter medication for this and likely one that a doctor will prescribe anyway is Sodium Docusate (trade name Colcase). This is a stool-softener which will help the stools pass naturally in a relatively short period of time. You take the tablets with a glass of water the night before; by morning the situation should be remedied. If it is not, this is another good reason to call your doctor or clinic for advice.

Getting some exercise is a good way to help your bowels to move. Walking for 20-30 minutes in the morning when you get up is a often successful in correcting this situation.

There are some foods and juices that might help. Prunes and prune juice are very successful because they are loaded with vitamins, are very easy on your system and just seem to work their way through the bowels easily.

Long-term solutions

After your bout with impacted stools or an impacted bowel you will need to establish some good patterns for the rest of your life. This is such a serious problem that you do not want it to recur. If your digestive system shuts down, you could open yourself up to all kinds of problems such as becoming septic or poisoned throughout your body. It is important to pass toxins and poisons out of your body daily so that you can stay well.

Water! Our bodies were made to function best with an optimal amount of hydration throughout bodies. Drink enough water for your body every day. What is normal for you? Ask your doctor how much you should be getting and then create the patterns in your life to get it. Water is a very healing thing and we all need plenty of it.

Exercise! Inactivity has a way of making our bodies work less efficiently. It's always best to be active to the highest degree that you are able. Make a choice to walk more in the errands you do daily. Take small steps toward exercise and it will all pay off in the long run.

Food! Eat foods that are naturally high in fiber, nutrients and vitamins. Choose fruits and vegetables over highly processed foods.

Your doctor! If you do not have one you can trust, find one. Communicate with your doctor about serious concerns and concerns you think you can deal with alone on your own. We all need some good help from time to time.  Your health will be better and you will live longer if you keep your doctor in the loop!
