Inflammation is the body's reaction to several disorders, by increasing blood flow to the affected body parts and causing soreness and swelling as a result. Chronic inflammation such as arthritis is a problem with many people, and while it can be treated with medication and cold compresses, a regimen of selected, inexpensive dietary supplements can aid the body in healing as well as let it cope with the detrimental effects of disease.
Here are some dietary supplements with which to treat inflammation:
- Fish oil. Research has shown than the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil (namely DHA and EPA) can lessen inflammation. You may obtain your dose of at least 3 grams of fish oil by eating freshly prepared sardines, tuna, salmon or mackerel, or taking it in capsule or liquid form. - Serrapeptase. This enzyme contributes to anti-inflammatory reactions in infected tissue. Serrapeptase is extracted from silkworm intestines.
- Bromelain. An enzyme derived from pineapple, bromelain reduces swelling and other inflammatory symptoms, including joint aches caused by arthritis and finger numbness resulting from carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Vitamin C. High amounts of citrus fruits can decrease symptoms of inflammation, especially if used in combination with other supplements.
- Vitamin E. This substance shuts down the nuclear factor-kB as well as the activator protein-1, both of which activate inflammatory genes. Take 400 to 800 IU of daily natural Vitamin E supplements.
- Rosemary. A familiar food seasoning, rosemary contains ursolic acid, a compound, which inhibits Cox-2 processes. Take 100 mg every day.
While prescription medicine can relieve the symptoms of inflammation, it can also come with undesirable side effects and more importantly, it does not address the causes, which are primarily related to poor nutrition. Dietary supplements are the key to treating inflammation by providing the body with the compounds to generate its own anti-inflammatory substances; regular intake combined with the reduction of processed food products will reduce the aches and swelling while contributing to the general health.
