Heel pain is acquired through a lot of causes, such as strain, injury, infection and illness. Treatments for severe and chronic heel pain aim to eliminate these causative factors, and alleviate the complications. Here are some common methods of treating heel pain.
- Let the heel rest and recover. This involves resting the heel and avoiding behavior that aggravate the heel’s condition. As much as possible, don’t strain your heel and avoid putting pressure on it, especially if you have a heel spur (a bone formation in your heel which causes pain). Eat nutritious food and do some mild exercises that don’t involve your heel (talk with your chiropodist for exercises you may safely do), in order to boost your health and speed the recovery of your damaged heel. When the heel has recovered, don’t put too much strain on it immediately. Let your heel become accustomed to normal activities before doing anything too risky with your heel such as running and jumping.
- Take analgesics. You can take over-the-counter pain relief, or have your physician prescribe a more powerful analgesic if you are experiencing severe heel and toe pain. Never take powerful anaesthetics without your doctor’s approval, for this will cause further complications and may aggravate your heel’s condition.
- Apply ice on the affected area. Soothe a sore feet by using a cold compress. Wrap ice cubes on a towel and gently massaged it to your heel for at least four times a day. This constricts the blood vessels of your heel, causing it to be less swollen and less sensitive to pain especially during episodes of acute heel pain.
- Massage. Getting a massage promotes blood circulation and warms the skin, and this makes healing of a damaged heel easier. Make sure that the massage practitioner knows about the condition of your heel to make him avoid doing movements that aggravate its condition. More importantly, a competent massage practitioner knows how to massage the structures of your heel to soothe the muscles, loosen blockages and correct misaligned joints and tendons.
- Wear proper footwear. Heel pads and heel cups help support the heel and prevent it from being strained. These are worn inside comfortable and well-fitting shoes for immediate pain relief.
- Wearing a splint. The foot is placed in a splint to prevent straining the heel muscles and promote healing. This is usually placed during sleep, but for severe cases, it is worn throughout the day, for at least a month.
- Medical procedures. These involve sound wave therapy, steroid injections, and surgical operations. With the exception of sound wave therapy, these procedures are invasive and cause stress to the heel. Though these procedures are effective, they have certain dangers associated with them, and it is your right to ask about possible complications.
- Alternative treatments. Hypnosis and meditation are alternative methods to cure heel pain. Suggestions of healing are given to a receptive subconscious mind, which result to healing of the actual injury. Though these treatments are not guaranteed to be effective, it promotes relaxation, which is proven to boost health.
Heel pain treatments are continuous and frequent, since recovery usually happens after months of waiting. Don’t lose patience and stick to your routine faithfully in order to attain a complete recovery.
