How To Manage Stress with Relaxation Techniques

There are many stress management techniques out there. Proper scheduling, making checklists, and keeping a positive attitude are all effective ways to reduce and relieve stress. However, perhaps the best set of techniques for stress relief fall under the category of relaxation.

Relaxation is an integral part of every worker's life. Without taking some time off to relax every once in a while, the motions of work can overwhelm you, even drive you crazy. You’ve got to take a load off before continuing with your hectic schedule. The problem is that you sometimes just don’t have the time for relaxation; deadlines and urgent engagements get in the way of your R&R. We all need to learn a few relaxation techniques for stress management to help us relax in those troubling times:

  1. Meditate. Meditation has long been an established method to gain relief from anxiety. For centuries, people have been using the power of their minds to manage their stress. Most meditation techniques focus simply on clearing your mind. Try finding a comfortable spot in your room and sitting in total silence. Try to remove all thoughts from your mind by concentrating on nothingness. As you continue your focus, you’ll find that calmness will come over you, like you’re entering a sleep-like state. Stay like this for a few minutes, and once you come out of your meditation, you’ll feel completely relaxed and energized.
  2. Listen. Relaxation can be achieved simply by listening to the right things. Having your favorite songs playing in the background will make you more upbeat, and the stress will diminish. You can also try listening to music created specifically for relaxation, such as those that incorporate the serene sounds of nature. You may find some spoken word relaxation techniques in your search for audible stress relief. These are guided exercises full of tips to manage your stress. All you have to do is listen to and follow the instructions. If you follow the stress relief tips properly, you’ll be feeling relaxed in no time.
  3. Exercise. You may not relax during it, but exercise is one of the best stress management techniques out there. Any physical activity will cause your brain to secrete endorphins, which are basically hormones that make you feel light and happy. If you don’t have the time to go to the gym, there are some exercises to relax your body and mind in the comfort of your own room. The most popular of these is progressive muscular relaxation. You can do this targeting a specific group of muscles in your body and tensing them. For instance, you could try clenching your hands for a few minutes. When you stop clenching, the muscles in your hand will react to the stress by deeply relaxing. You can do this with every muscle group in your body, although it takes a little bit of practice to achieve full body relaxation.
  4. Breathe. Lastly, relaxation can be achieved simply by breathing. Long, deep breaths are an integral part of meditation, as it helps to clear the mind and calm you. Just breathe in deeply, hold it for a few seconds, and slowly let the air out. You can further enhance this technique by getting some aromatherapy candles or air fresheners formulated for relaxation.
