At one or several points in our lives, we've all had to contend with that uneasy feeling of difficulty in defecating or an unexplainable feeling of being bloated and satiation. These are just some of the common signs of constipation, a medical condition defined as having very low occurrences of bowel movements. Constipation, which can also couple with diarrhea in some cases, doesn't really cause more physical discomfort than mental distress for some people who notice a sudden decline in the number of their bowel movements in a week. To rid yourself of this weird and unsettling condition, follow these simple treatments:
- Drink water. You may not notice it but water plays a major role in the formation of your excrements. Drinking only a few glasses of water every day would cause your stool to harden, making it hard to extinguish from your system. Make sure to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day in order to ensure proper digestion and relaxed bowel movements.
- Exercise. Another thing you may not notice is that exercise aids in the digestive process. During exercise, chances are your abdominal muscles are efficiently used. The contraction and relaxation of these muscles help the intestines to move stools smoothly about, ensuring proper bowel movements.
- High-fiber cereals. Most of the time, indigestion and constipation are caused by a lack of fiber in your diet. Fiber adds bulk to the intestines, which enables the intestines to produce well-formed stools that are relatively much easier to excrete. Opt for high-fiber cereals for breakfast instead of your peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and make sure to up your fiber intake by incorporating fiber-rich foods in your diet.
- Prunes and other fruits. Prunes help in making your stool smooth thereby making it easier to pass. Other fruits, such as pineapple, contain high amounts of fiber that aid digestion. You can also try fruit juices if you don't feel like peeling and munching on whole fruits.
- Check your medications. Some medications that contain narcotics produce unpleasant side-effects like constipation. Check with your physician whether these medicines are causing unnecessary problems, and see if you can substitute other medications to treat your other conditions.
- Biofeedback. Biofeedback is a physical effort to easily pass stool. It involves contraction and relaxation of the muscles in the rectum to stimulate bowel movement and treat possible constipation.
- Laxative. Laxatives are a last-ditch effort at curing constipation. These substances induce bowel movement and improve the formation of the stool, surely ending your constipation spell. But be careful not to abuse laxatives because they may lead to more serious complications.
Constipation can also be a sign of other complications in the body, so make sure that if you experience other symptoms with constipation, consult your doctor immediately. If your constipation persists to as much as over a week with these treatments, then there's a great possibility that you have contracted other complications throughout the ordeal, so it's best to meet with your physician to address this.
