How To Treat Edema

Edema is a condition that causes accumulation of fluids between the spaces in the tissues of your body.  Excess fluid accumulates in narrow spaces between the tissues, often manifesting as swelling under the skin.  Edema often occurs in the hands and the feet, causing uncomfortable and ugly swelling in these areas.  It is best to treat this condition right away, so be sure to arm yourself with information on how to remedy it.

  1. Read.  One of the best armors against any disease is information, so make sure that you know what you're up against.  Read books, journals and websites about your condition in order to know its many intricacies. 
  2. Reduce salt intake.  Salt is a substance that attracts water, and high concentrations of salt in your system can attract fluids to accumulate in one area of your body.  Not only does high salt volume cause bladder stones and other complications, it may also manifest as edema as well.
  3. Massage the swollen area.  Massage the swollen area in the natural flow of blood to ease circulation and relieve the accumulated fluid.  Be careful when doing this, as too much pressure can actually aggravate the condition.  For more advanced stages of edema, hire an expert masseur or a physical therapist to do this for you.
  4. Clean the area.  Make sure to keep the swollen area clean to prevent further infection.  Irritants and other bacterial infections may infiltrate the swollen part and cause further problems, so make sure to keep it neat and tidy.
  5. Relieve pressure from the area.  It is important to relieve pressure from the swollen area to make sure the fluids flow naturally.  Stretch out or move the part where the swelling occurs so that the pressure doesn't build up on the edema.
  6. Eat healthy food.  Eat foods that reduce inflammation and improve digestion.  A diet that improves blood circulation may also prove beneficial.  Use oil sparingly and if you must, opt for the unsaturated ones and those that have omega-3 to aid your circulatory system.
  7. Turmeric.  Turmeric is an herb known for its anti-inflammatory properties, so this can be a good option in treating edema.  Apply the paste of turmeric-or sandalwood if you want-on the swollen area to reduce inflammation.

Remember that edema can be caused by a variety of reasons and so treatment isn't exactly full-proof.  Talk with your doctor on how you can effectively target the cause to relieve you of this condition.  Make sure that the swelling isn't exposed to further stress, pressure, injury or extreme temperatures.  It may also help to lift the part with the edema to promote circulation-such as putting your feet up a chair or wrapping an elastic sleeve around the arm.  If your doctor prescribes, you may also opt to take medicines to relieve the swelling and stop the inflammation.
