There are so many types of diseases that the world has now. Some are curable, and some are not. And one of the most feared is cancer. Cancer is an occurrence in which cells grow abnormally with a tendency to proliferate or multiply uncontrollably and, in some cases, to spread or metastasize. Cancer is not just a single disease. It is a group of over a hundred 100 distinctive and different diseases. Just learning about its definition, it's really something that would cause a lot of worry to anyone who's afflicted by it or even just a loved one.

There are three types of skin cancers. They are the following with their characteristics:

  1. Basal Cell Carcinoma - This is the most common and curable type among the skin cancers. This appears like a waxy bump or a scar that may appear on your face, neck, back or chest. The patient suffering from this need not be confined in a hospital as the surgery can be done even at the doctor's clinic. This does not cause too much pain and uneasiness.
  2. Squamous Cell Skin Cancer Carcinoma - This type has a small chance of spreading to other areas but is as curable as the first type. This one looks like a red nodule or bump, firm to the touch, can be scaly with crusty appearance that may appear on your face, neck, hands or arms, ears and lips.
  3. Melanoma - This is the least common but if left unattended, it could lead to a very serious illness. This is also the one that could spread throughout the body, including the lymph nodes and other organs.

There are some people who also worry about their moles. Moles are small skin pigmentation usually brown or black. Some moles disappear in time and some stay for life. There are also two types of moles:

  1. Congenital Nevi - This one appears from birth and is most likely to develop into cancer.
  2. Dysplastic Nevi - This one is larger in size compared to regular moles. They could be larger than pencil erasers and have a bigger chance of developing into skin cancer, too.

Most moles differ in size, but if yours is more than 7mm or has signs of cancer, consult your skin doctor immediately. If you want to see pictures of the types of skin cancers and types of moles, you may visit the Web site, cancer.about.com and webmd.com. In this way, you will also be able to identify the kind of skin growth or mole that you see on your skin. But for concrete diagnosis, a skin doctor would be the best person to talk to.

There are so many people concerned about skin cancer. In fact, there is the Skin Cancer Foundation with their Web site, skincancer.org. Their sole purpose is to help the public in providing information about the disease. But no one should wait until someone is suffering before learning about the disease. It is still your responsibility to be informed and be able to take care of yourself. If you notice any changes in your skin, again, it would be best to have it checked by a doctor. As the saying goes, "prevention is better than having to find a cure." A healthy lifestyle including a healthy and balanced diet and a regular check-up, including a skin check-up would be best in order to make sure that you are healthy inside and out.
