The solar system is made up of the sun, planets and other heavenly bodies. It contains the eight known planets that make the sun as its center. The solar system formerly had nine planets but new studies in the field of astronomy indicate that there were really just eight. The three inner planets are Mercury, Venus and Earth. Mercury is the smallest planet and closest to the sun. Venus is called the morning star because aside from the moon, it is the brightest object visible in the night sky. The Earth is the third planet, and is the only one that sustains life.

The fourth planet in the solar system is Mars, often referred to as the red planet. The fifth planet is Jupiter, the biggest planet in the solar system. Next is ringed Saturn, named after the Roman god Saturnus. Uranus is seventh the planet, which has the coldest atmosphere in the solar system. The eighth planet is Neptune, one of the ice giants, which consists of hydrogen and helium. Pluto is not considered as a planet anymore but it still remains as a part of the solar system.
