How To Breathe in Female Voice Training

Breathing is the most basic thing you have to learn if you are seriously thinking about singing.  You might think that breathing is natural and something that we do involuntarily.  It is true, in most cases.  But when we sing, we can actually control the air we inhale and exhale in order for us to use it efficiently.  The following will give you some guidelines on how you can breathe properly in female voice training.

  • The very first thing you have to remember is your posture.  Stand straight. Your body should be aligned properly, especially your spine.  This will give you enough support to control the air you inhale and exhale.  A good practice is to lie down flat on your back and place one hand over your stomach.  Breathe for about twenty to thirty seconds while in this position, making sure that your chest does not move.  Your stomach should do the breathing and should be the one that rises and falls as you breathe in and out.  You should practice breathing lying on the floor long enough until your muscle memory gets hold of the feeling or memorizes this routine.
  • Once you felt like your body is breathing with this style, stand and up start breathing this way.  You will know if you’re doing it incorrectly if both chest and shoulders start to move. You stomach should be the one moving as you inhale and exhale.  This is not the normal way we breathe, and so you will need some time and train your body to be familiar with this method of breathing.  One way to know if you are doing it right is that your stomach should look like a balloon that inflates when it gets some air and deflates when it gets the air out.
  • There is a technique you can use when you inhale.  You must remember that in order to sing, you must be able to inhale quickly since the music won't wait for you to get that air.  You need to know how to inhale quickly and get it out in time for the next note.  To do this, you should learn to imagine or feel as you practice.  Imagine the air you are breathing as something that weighs as heavy as fifty pounds and imagine it dropping onto your body.  You will need to discover and familiarize yourself with this sensation, because this is the best way you can breathe in while singing.  If you feel like yawning, this is normal while you are working on the technique because the body tends to be confused while you are exploring the sensation.  Your body will get used to the process with practice.
  • Control your exhalation. The same as inhaling, you can also control exhaling to help you control the amount of air you let out on a slow phrase or a quick note.  One way to practice exhaling is to take a feather and blow it and keep it in the air for as high as you can.  Blow a steady stream of air to keep it up, focusing more on the abdomen.  While your chest should stay still, your abdomen should have slowly returned to its original position.

The diaphragm is a small piece of muscle between your chest and stomach, and it controls the air that gets in and out of our body. You will need to practice and exercise your diaphragm for you to be able to breathe effectively while singing. Since this is usually perfected through muscle memory, frequent practice is a must.
