How To Build a Pedestal Bed

There are a number of reasons why you should use a pedestal bed in a smaller area, with the added benefit of not having to have a box spring under your mattress. In recent years these have become more popular than most other styles of mattress.

You will need to travel to your local home improvement store before starting to build the pedestal bed. You will need to have these pieces of lumber prior to starting your project. The pieces of wood you are going to need are going to be 2x4x7 which will need to be cut down to the size of 80 inches. Once you have two pieces that measure this you will need to purchase 2 pieces of 2x4x5 which will need to be cut down to the size of 54 inches.

Once you have this you will also need to purchase an additional 2 pieces of lumber that measure 2x4x5 as well that will have to measure 50 inches in length. These will be the support beams that will go in the center area of your pedestal bed.

You will also need to purchase 2 pieces of plywood that measure 4x8, and these will need to be cut down to the size of 80 inches by 27 inches. This will be what is used to place your mattress on.

You will also need to purchase a number of hinges that will be used at the corners of the bed frame. These will hold the two sides together with the two end pieces of lumber. Once you have the hinges you will need to also purchase a number of drywall screws which you will use to place the plywood that will hold up the mattress.

With the pieces of wood that you have measured and set up on the side, take and attach the hinges to each side of the 2x4. You will want to place the hinges on the inside of the frame so that you are not going to see these hinges when looking at the bed. Once you have all four pieces put together the next step is to take the other two support beams that will need to be drilled into the remaining frame of the pedestal bed. Once you have this done you will need to take the pieces of wood that you measured to be cut into the size of 80 x 27 inches. You will want to place these on top of the frame and meet in the middle. Once you have them in the middle of the bed be sure that you screw a number of screws into the boards to keep them on the bed. Once you have placed them on the bed frame and secured them you will want to add your mattress. Or if you want to you can add a coat of paint to the pedestal bed frame you have made.
