How To Build a Vane Anemometer

An anemometer is a tool which is used to gauge and calculate wind speed.  It is a very common tool, and is often found near weather stations.  The anemometer measures the wind speed by spinning when it is hit by wind gusts.  While there are very complex and accurate anemometers available, there are simple steps that can be taken to build a cheap and easy to construct anemometer which can be placed in anyone’s lawn.  This article will give you the steps needed in how to build a vane anemometer.
The first step in how to build an anemometer is to gather supplies for the anemometer’s construction.  Building a basic anemometer will require four sturdy sixteen ounce plastic cups, two long wooden sticks that are at least 24 inches in length, two glass beads, a wooden dowel, small nails, and a pencil.
After gathering all necessary supplies, the next step in how to build an anemometer is to connect the sturdy plastic cups to the wooden sticks.  You will want to attach the each cup to each end of the wooden sticks, with the mouths of the plastic cups facing outwards.  To apply the cup to the wooden stick, you will need to install a small nail through the cup and into the wooden stick.

After connecting the cups to the wooden sticks, the next step in how to build an anemometer is to attach the sticks together.  You will want to lay the two sticks so they form a perfect “plus” sign and four right angles.  Using either another nail, or some wood glue, you can attach the wooden sticks together.
After forming the plus sign shape with the wood, the next step in how to build an anemometer is to install the beads into the wood.  To do this, you will want to place one bead a half inch above the center of the anemometer, and another bead a half inch below the center of the anemometer.  The beads can be secured into the anemometer through either the use of a nail or glue.
The last step in how to build an anemometer is to place the anemometer outside.  The anemometer can be placed in a variety of locations, but most people will place the device either on top of a roof, or in the backyard.  To properly install the anemometer, you will need to make sure it is installed perfectly parallel with the ground and is in a location that will not be blocked by any wind.  The anemometer should be placed on a pole or post to ensure that it can spin freely.  Once the anemometer is properly installed, an individual should be able to gauge wind speeds by looking at it.
