Take a look into the world of the Selachimorpha species, the sharks. More than 420 million years ago in the time of the dinosaurs, these predators had already lived and now it is our duty to protect these creatures from extinction. It’s not a surprise that the popular network, Discovery Channel, began an annual airing of all things sharks! The show became known as Shark Week, which first aired on Discovery Channel in 1987. It was a week-long series fanatical about sharks. In 2004, they released a bonus episode in DVD, Anatomy of a Shark Bite. 2007’s collection was an array of sorts from latter episodes: The Shark Week 20th Anniversary Collection. And in 2008 was a complete 2007 edition entitled Ocean of Fear. The best of this set is Worst Shark attack ever, as Discovery Channel described it. It was centered on the sinking of the USS Indianapolis in the Philippine Sea on July 30, 1945. They aired it the eve of the anniversary of the said event in history. Questions like “why the sharks attacked” and “how the 300 out of 900 survivors fought the sharks for 4 days before being rescued”.

Another movie not on Shark Week is Jaws, and though it is fictional, you can really see how an attack goes. But take comfort in the 2006 investigation into the International Shark Attack Files (ISAF), where out of the 96 alleged shark attacks, 62 of them were unprovoked attacks and 16 were provoked attacks. The latest DVD collection is Shark Week: The Greatest Bites Collection, which features 10 various episodes from previous Shark Weeks. The week kicks off with a two-hour episode on the true story behind the bloody attacks of 1916 that led to the movie, Jaws. Episodes like Surviving Sharks, How Not to Become Shark Bait, and shows hosted by Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman of Mythbusters, Mythbusters Shark Special 2, and the final addition, Dirty Jobs: Greenland Shark Quest hosted by Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs. Mike Rowe also starred in the 2008 collection. You can source them online at Amazon.com for great savings. A little in scoop on what’s upcoming in 2010—they will be letting out Blood in the Water. Scuba diving packages for Shark Week 2010 will include seminars, and you get to take part in studies and research. If you are interested in the Zebra Shark for example, a nocturnal shark circling the Indo-Pacific, you bet you’ll learn a lot more from a shark sage.

If you are longing for more information on Shark Week, check out their website on Discovery Channel.com and await future episodes. Watch out, it’s a feeding frenzy starting July/August. Once you get really into it, you might want to visit Burning Tiki for a genuine SL Shark Tooth Necklace. Whether you’ve been in the shark frenzy for a while now or had just become an avid fan, it is no question that people are amazed if not obsessed by these predators.
