If you were asked why you don’t create more, I’m sure you could come up with a list of reasons as long as your arm. I’m pretty sure too that this list won’t include something like: “Because I haven’t chosen to create more.”
Whatever external and internal forces and circumstances appear to be working against us, one fact will always remain: YOU choose how creative you are. You choose how you want to live your life. So here are 5 essential ways you can choose to make YOUR life a life full of creativity:
- Choose to accept that creativity is important to you. Creating isn’t an occasional hobby or something that’s nice to do on a rainy day. It’s embedded within you. Being creative is a part of how you are and who you are. When you’re creating, you feel like nothing else can make you feel. Choose to accept how valuable these feelings are to your general well being and sense of purpose. Choose to accept that creativity is important to you.
- Choose to make time to create. When you say you don’t have time to create, what you’re actually saying is, “I’m choosing not to make creative time enough of a priority.” Instead of trying to fit a session of creativity in “when you have time”, make it a core activity each and every day. Creating for just 15 minutes a day is little over 1% of your 24 hours. Isn’t creativity important enough to you to commit at least that much of your day to?
- Choose to see the inspiration all around you. When you feel uninspired and unmotivated, you become virtually oblivious to the stimulation around you, as if you were walking around with a crash helmet on backwards. When you choose to acknowledge each of your 5 senses, and focus on what you’re experiencing through each of them, you realize the inspiration you need to create is wherever you choose to look for it.
- Choose to have endless creative ideas. All of us have a constant flow of creative ideas coming to us. When it feels like you never have any ideas, what’s actually happening is you’re not CAPTURING any ideas, so they’ve evaporated before you can do anything with them. Use an Ideas Journal – a pocket notebook you carry with you at all times – and jot down those ideas as soon as they appear. Choose to have – and to capture – endless creative ideas.
- Choose to celebrate your creativity. When you create something, be proud and acknowledge the effort and energy that’s gone into it. Creating is a brave and noble act, acknowledge and celebrate the fact that you’ve stepped up to the challenge and chosen to create, chosen to make use of your creative talent. The more you choose to celebrate your creativity, the more easily you’ll create.
Follow these 5 steps and choose a life of creativity today. You owe it not only to yourself, but to everyone who will be touched and inspired by what you create.
