How To Compare Drama Programs

If you want to study drama, it is important to compare drama programs carefully.  There are thousands of drama programs throughout the country, and each one is unique.  It is important to find the program that fits you best.  A big name is not the best indicator. Not even the Yale drama program is right for everyone.  You must consider many factors before choosing.  First, you must decide why are you studying drama.  Are you a high school student?  Are you choosing a college or graduate school, or are you a professional who wishes to hone existing skills?  The answer to these questions will decide what types of programs you are going to compare.

Once you can answer why, there are still several factors to consider. Location is key. Do you want to stay local or move, perhaps to a city with a strong theater district?  If you are considering relocating, it is important to confirm housing availability first.  Also important is knowing what type of performing art you wish to study.  You can choose between acting, singing, dance or a combination of these skills.  It is essential that you compare the drama programs which specialize in the skills you want.

By now you will have narrowed your comparison to five drama programs or less. To make your decision, you must now carefully examine each program.  Consider the artistic philosophy of each drama program.  Some are performance-based, while others emphasize drama as literature.  Some see the Stanislavski method as the best acting method.  Others see it as simply one of many approaches a character.  You will have to decide which program best fits your own acting philosophy and personal style.

There are drama programs which are nearly as old as the United States, and there are programs which were created last year.  The older a program is, the better it is, correct?  Not always, and not for every student.  If you want a creative, wholly organic approach to drama then look at newer companies.  If you adore the classics and great theatre giants like the Barrymores, then you will want to consider an older drama program.  Finally, it is important to compare the faculty of each program.  Drama is a living art.  It is constantly growing and changing.  It is important to learn from teachers who are deeply involved in drama as an art, not just as a series of classroom exercises.  You should confirm that the faculty is made up of working drama professionals.
