A significant part of being consistent and abundant in your creative work is about finding your creative flow. Maintaining momentum by creating regularly takes so much less energy and effort than keep stopping and starting time and time again.

Here’s your 5 step plan to finding this unstoppable flow in YOUR creativity:

  1. A daily creative habit. The key to any kind of creative flow and consistency is to create every day, and have this habit embedded in you so you create as easily as you breathe, eat and sleep.

Choose a time of day that works best for you, and create for a minimum of 15 minutes. Don’t create only “when you can squeeze it in”. Make it a regular fixture in your daily routine.

  2. Clothes for all occasions. Creativity isn’t something you keep hidden in your wardrobe and only get out on special occasions like a dinner jacket or little black party dress. It’s your daywear, evening wear, leisurewear, and favorite pajamas all in one.

By realizing this, and staying aware at all times of the creative inspiration all around you, you keep your creativity flowing. Even if you’re not creating with your hands and your body, you’re still creating in your mind.

  3. Record your ideas. Once you become more aware that creative inspiration is wherever you look for it, ideas will flow to you, thick and fast. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking, “What a great idea, I’ll remember that”, then completely forgetting it moments later.

Keep an Ideas Journal with you, a notebook you can record your ideas in whenever they come to you. Don’t censor your ideas and dismiss them as silly or useless; write them down, so you have the choice later to use them or not.

  4. Regular energy boosts. Just as a long distance runner needs a regular energy boost and liquid intake, keep your creativity energy high. Notice when you need a break and give yourself time to regroup before you return to creating.

A creativity energy boost can be as simple as 5 minutes listening to an energizing favorite piece of music, or it can be an afternoon at a gallery, exhibition, or place you’ve never been, to freshen you up and get those creative juices flowing again.

  5. Know what’s working. Becoming aware of what works for you is essential to maintaining an unstoppable creative flow. With all of the steps above, try something a few times, see how it helps you be more creative, and then make any adjustments necessary.

By constantly being aware and fine tuning these techniques, you gradually become more and more creative, and the flow builds. If something’s working well, keep doing it. If something isn’t working well, make a change and then see what difference it makes.

These 5 steps will help you find and maintain a free flow in your creativity. Remember, it’s easier to keep flowing than to start, stop, start, stop time and time again. Follow the steps and find your creative flow, starting today.
