Each of us has a vast treasure trove within us, full of artistic creations yet to be discovered. But how many of these precious gifts ever see the light of day? Tragically, very few.
So, here are some tips to help you bring forth more of your unique creative riches:
- Experiment in different media. We all have our favourite materials and forms of creating, it's part of knowing how you best express yourself as an artist. But all too often, this simply becomes an excuse to play it safe, and just reproduce almost identical versions of the same artwork over and over again. Hmm. How creative is that?
Experiment with different styles and materials from time to time and it has two key benefits. First, you may well find a new media you love creating in, but have never tried before. Second, you can't help but expand your experience in creating, taking back new ideas and perspectives to your more familiar and preferred creative forms.
- Believe that you have unlimited creativity. Many of us are limited by beliefs around our creativity that we hardly know we have. Beliefs like, "I can only have one or two good ideas every year or so" or "I'm not really creative, I've just got lucky with a few projects. Anyone could've done the same, or better."
Take stock of some of these kind of beliefs you have. Simply ask yourself: "What do I believe that contradicts the belief that I have unlimited creative treasures waiting be discovered in me?" Weed out those limiting beliefs, and start turning them around into positive equivalents.
- Create like you were a two-year-old. Imagine you were two years old and had none of the knowledge and experience in your favoured media that you do now. How would you create? If you were given a pack of coloured pencils for the first time, what would you do with them?
Creating from this perspective is powerful because it encourages you to forget all the assumptions you make about how you create, and the perceived limitations of your materials. It also fuels your curiosity by naturally asking: "What can I do with these objects before me, how can I express what I have inside, how can I communicate?"
These tips will get you started on believing in and discovering some of those sparkling creative jewels within you. So what are you waiting for, go start putting them into action. Go create!
