If you're a big-time knitter, then you know how many needles end up in your home.  You've seen those adorable needle vases for keeping your needles in one place, but you're not sure how to knit it all together. Today, you'll have the help of this article and great instructions on how to knit your own knitting needle vase.

In order to make this vase, you'll need:

  • Forty yards of a heavy wool blend yarn of your choice
  • A pair of double pointed needles, scissors, a yarn needle
  • An empty canister (the instructions today are for an 8.5" x 5" canister)

Your gauge is going to be eighteen stitches and twenty-five rows per four inches knit in round. Let's get started!

  1. First, you want to cast on forty stitches. You'll want to distribute the stitches among three of your needles. This way you have thirteen stitches on the first two, and fourteen on the last one.
  2. Second, join in the round, and be careful not to twist any stitches or it'll be obvious in the finished product. Be sure to put a marker before the last stitch so you don't make any mistakes in regards to where it is.
  3. Third, knit every row until the piece measures five inches in height, the same as your container.
  4. Fourth, knit two together at the beginning and end of each needle for every other row until there are twenty-two stitches. Once that's complete, knit the next row.
  5. Fifth, knit two together across so you have eleven stitches on two needles.
  6. Sixth, knit two together across again, knitting the last stitch. This should be about six stitches.
  7. Finally, cut the yarn so it has a tail. Thread the needle and slip the stitches onto it. Once that's done, pull it tight and weave in the ends.

Your finished product will be approximately nine inches by five and a half inches, and it will easily hold several needles.

To be sure that this canister doesn't tip over with the weight of the needles, tape some washers or metal objects along the bottom of the canister to distribute weight. This project can also hold objects such as crochet hooks, pens, pencils, art supplies...the list goes on. Now you know how to knit an adorable and lively knitting needle vase!
