Have you noticed the vast plethora of fascinating animals in Africa?  Perhaps you noticed them while watching an educational program on television or during an outing.  Hopefully, your introduction to the African animals sparked a curiosity within you to want to learn even more.  The following are a few suggestions about how you can further your education regarding these fine creatures.

When trying to learn about any subject your local library is the first place to start.  They will have a wide array of information on the topic you are researching.  If there is a book in existence and it is in a library, your librarian can put in an order to have a copy transferred to your library.  The following are all promising recommendations in the area of African animals:

  • "African Animals" by: Caroline Arnold
  • The California Academy of Science Library provides a listing of several books along with websites about African Animals.

In addition to reading about African animals it helps to spend time actually observing them.  Zoos are a wonderful place to do just this.  At the zoo you are able to observe almost any animal you chose for as long as you like.  This would be during visiting hours of course, unless you have made other arrangements with the zoo's office and lead zoologist ahead of time.   Most zoos provide a wide array of information about the animals at their location on their website.  They also have educational seminars and courses that are held at the zoo.  Sometimes the information about these events is posted online, other times it may be necessary to contact the zoo's office for times and if there is any charge.  Utilizing your local zoo, while at the same time reading a book about African animals, is a great way to begin to see some of their characteristics in action.  Not to mention that you also have staff handy to answer any questions that you may have.

The best way to learn about any animal is to observe it in its natural habitat.  If at all possible, once you have already begun to educate yourself about these animals, plan a trip to Africa.  There are many economical tour packages that will include a guided safari for you.   By making the investment in this trip you will be able to truly learn about African animals and put all the knowledge you have just acquired to the test!
