A breastfeeding gift basket can be an invaluable gift to an expectant mother. Breastfeeding supplies and aids can get expensive. Once you make certain the expectant mother intends to nurse her infant, there are several necessities, and some luxuries, to consider including in the gift basket. Here's how to put together a gift basket with breastfeeding supplies for an expectant mother.
- One of the biggest necessities for a nursing mother is a breast pump. There are manual breast pumps, electronic breast pumps, single, and double. One thing to consider here is time and practicality. Manual breast pumps will take more time and energy, but are not unheard of. It's also worth considering, regardless if you use a single or a double, both breasts "let down" at the same time. So it may be more practical to save time (and milk) and pump both breasts at the same time.
- Another necessity, to go along with the breast pump, is milk storage bags. There is quite a variety to choose from. But it is imperative to use storage bags that are strictly designed for breast milk storage. Many have double seals to prevent leaking, as well as a place to label the date and time the milk was expressed and stored.
- Some nursing mothers find it helpful to use a pillow to help elevate the infant to the breast. There are pillows specifically made for this, although a regular pillow may suffice. Also along these lines is a nursing footstool. These are not as high as a regular footstool, but elevate the mother's feet just enough to support the infant on her lap. These stools also add comfort for the mother to put her in a more relaxing position during nursing sessions.
- Another thing to consider for the gift basket is breast pads. There are disposable nursing pads as well as reusable, washable ones. These breast pads prevent leaks from penetrating through the bra and shirt. If the expectant mother is new to nursing, a sample of both to try out may be your best bet.
- Nursing covers are a great luxury for nursing mothers to have. There are several types, ranging from slings, to "Hooter Hiders," to just using a nursing tank with a burp cloth.
- Finally, an invaluable addition to a breastfeeding gift basket is a business card for a trusted licensed Lactation Consultant. The ability to breastfeed is a gift, but it can also be quite a challenge. Many mothers encounter difficulties and require the aid of such a consultant to proceed.
