Making a Chinese lantern is a great craft project for families. All you need is a few simple supplies and you can create a colorful lantern at home. Follow these instructions to learn how to make a Chinese lantern.
- Colored construction paper
- Glue or tape
- Decorative elements (optional) like crepe paper, glitter and shiny stones or beads
Fold a rectangular piece of paper in half lengthwise. You are making a long, thin rectangle. Place the fold line down and the open line up on a flat surface.
Cut stripes in the paper. Starting at the fold line, one inch from the edge, cut a line that reaches to one inch from the open sides. These cuts do not go all the way through to the open side of the paper. Instead you have stripes part way through. Cut stripes approximately ½ inch apart down the fold line until you are one inch from the end.
Unfold the paper. Your paper should look like a solid rectangle border around bands of paper.
Wrap the paper in a circle so that the two short ends meet. Glue or tape the ends together. You now have the body of the lantern.
Using another piece of paper the same color, cut the handle. Cut a strip of paper 6 inches long by ½ inch wide. Glue or tape the handle to the top of the lantern.
Decorate the lantern (optional). Consider decorating the lantern with crepe paper streamers, or attaching a row of fringe to the bottom or even gluing glitter or shiny rhinestones to the side. Remember to have fun with the lanterns and make as many as you need. You can even create one for each member of the family to celebrate their own personal style.
Your lantern is complete. Hang it from a hook or make several lanterns to string along the wall.
Making a simple Chinese lantern is a great way to decorate for Chinese New Year or any other celebration. Consider these simple steps a rainy day craft project with the kids or an inexpensive way to prepare for your holiday party.
