Two things often come to mind when we think of parties: clowns and candy. So, why not combine them for the ultimate party fun? A clown-shaped piñata would be a creative and fun addition to any party. Piñatas come in many shapes and varieties. They can be purchased at most party supply stores; however, they are easy to make. By following these simple directions, and using basic, inexpensive materials, you can learn how to make a clown piñata.

To make a clown piñata you will need:

  • two balloons
  • newspaper or strips of colored tissue paper
  • papier-mâché paste
  • markers or paint
  • candy

First, tear the paper into thin strips. They don't have to be the same size; you can have both short and long pieces. You can purchase colorful tissue paper or just use newspaper.

Next, blow up your balloons. You need two: one for the head and one for the base. Make one smaller than the other for the head. Do not attach them yet.

Now it is time to attach the paper to the balloon. You can either make your own paste by mixing water with flour, or you can purchase papier-mâché glue from a craft store. Whatever you choose, dip the paper strips into the glue and place them on the balloons. Make sure the paper strip slightly overlaps the piece preceding it. Cover the entire balloon, except for an area at the top about two to three inches in diameter. This will allow a hole for the candy.

Let the first layer dry before applying a second layer. You will need to create three or four layers.

When your last layer has dried, puncture the balloons and remove them.

Poor the candy in the hole in the balloon, then attach the head to the body using more paper and paste.

Once the paper around the neck has dried, you can decorate your clown. You can use paint or markers to add color. You can also use colorful paper if you want to skip this step. How you decorate your clown is up to you. You can add fuzzy craft balls, plastic eyes, real buttons, or even hair to your clown piñata.

After everything has dried, you are ready to hang your piñata. It may seem like a shame to destroy it after all that work, but the fun you and your party guest will have will be worth it.
