How To Make a Duvet Cover from Bedsheets

One of the highest impact items to change the look of the room is the bedding.  It changes the entire look and feel of the room with very little effort.  Purchasing bedding sets for every whim is an expensive proposition, so what can be done about wanting variety without a large cost?  One of the best ways to change the look of a room is with a duvet cover.  These are much less expensive than bedding sets, but even less expensive than that is making them yourself with bedsheets.

Using bedsheets enables you to create customized solutions for an otherwise dull room.  Because there are so many choices in colors and patterns, the ability to have several choices is within reach at a moments notice.

1. Creating a duvet cover out of bed sheets could not be easier.  There is no pattern and no cutting will be required.  There are only a minimal amount of tools needed and a minimal amount of sewing skills.  If you can put your foot on a sewing machine pedal and sew a straight line, you can create a duvet cover.
2. The first items needed will, of course, be the sheets.  Only the flat sheets are needed.  Fitted sheets will not be needed for this project, so purchase only flat sheets if that is an available option.  The sheets can be any color, any pattern and even any fabric.
3. With right sides together, sew both of the long sides and one of the short sides of the bedsheets together, leaving 6 inches of the long sides unsewn.  Pins can be used to hold the sheets together for stability, although for a more experienced sewer, that isn't necessary.   This creates a bag of sorts to put your comforter into.
4. Once the sides are sewn and depending on the experience level of the creator, button holes can now be created so that when the comforter is inserted, it can be held in with buttons.  This is the preferred method of closure and the most decorative, since button designs are endless.  However, if the skill level of the sewer is not up to making button holes, the closure can be created with sew on snaps and even Velcro.

Once the technique is down, creating duvet covers out of bedsheets is easy, and the process goes quickly to change look and feel of the entire room.  There is nothing more appealing and satisfying than a fresh change in a room.
