Many people love to welcome Fall by hanging a wreath on the front door.  There are many options for making a wreath.  It helps if you know what kind of statement you want to make.  Should it be a general seasonal wreath, or do you want to celebrate a particular Fall holiday?

Most wreaths consist of a base wreath made from a material such as grapevine, Styrofoam or hay.  Additional materials are then placed on top of this base.  There are many choices to choose from such as fabric, leaves, flowers, nuts and berries, candy, pumpkins, and the like.

A cool treat for a teacher’s classroom is a Fall candy wreath.  This can be placed on the classroom door and as the countdown to Halloween approaches, the kids can anticipate getting the candy from the wreath on the big day.  This wreath can also be hung inside the home, and pieces may be given to Halloween or Thanksgiving guests.

Materials needed for a Fall candy wreath include:

  • Styrofoam wreath
  • Fall colored fabric and bow
  • Fall floral and leaves
  • Additional items include straight pins and a hot glue gun
  • Candy: The orange pumpkin face lollipops in the wrapper; small, rectangular candy bars in Fall colors such as snack-size Kit Kat bars; long, slender candy rolls such as Smarties or Tootsie Rolls; and caramel creams wrapped in Fall colors.

Design
The Styrofoam form should be wrapped in Fall-colored fabric.  Purchase enough to wrap around the wreath, overlapping at the edges.  You want to make sure the entire wreath is covered.  Once the fabric has been completely wrapped around the wreath, tack the ends into the Styrofoam with straight pins.

At this point, using the hot glue gun, attach any floral or leaves to the wreath, making it very full.  Attach a Fall-colored bow to the bottom or top of the wreath.  It is important that the bow does not clash with the fabric on the wreath.  A solid color bow would look great with printed fabric. Finally, attach the candy scarecrows to the wreath with the hot glue gun.

Making the candy scarecrows
This requires the use of a hot glue gun.  Put a strip of glue right down the middle on the back of the Kit Kat bar.  Take the lollipop, keeping it in its wrapper, and place the stick onto the glue. The head should rest on top of the candy bar.  It should now look like a body with a pumpkin head. At this point, attach the long candies, such as the Smarties, to the arm and leg areas by gluing the twisted ends onto the back of the candy bar. Once enough scarecrows have been made for every child in the class or for every anticipated guest, the scarecrows can be glued onto the wreath using the hot glue gun.  Accent empty spaces in the wreath by gluing the caramel creams to the wreath.  This makes a very cute treat for the kids.
