How To Make a Heart Pin

If you're thinking of making something for a loved one, try this lovable craft. A homemade heart pin is a great gift for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, an anniversary, a birthday and even a wedding. Follow these instructions to create your very own heart pin.

Step 1

Gather your supplies. To begin, gather everything you'll need to make a heart pin:

  • Small wooden heart (carve your own if you can't find one in craft stores)
  • Paint
  • Pin with backing
  • Decorative supplies (optional)

Step 2

Paint your heart. Before you can make your heart into a pin, it needs a good base color. Start with a good coat of red or pink paint. Put on two coats if you want a stronger color.

Step 3

Decorate your heart pin. Once the paint is dry on your heart, it's time to decorate it. This is where you get to be creative! Add sequins, sparkles, letters or any other little decoration you think will look great on your heart pin. You might want to make your heart look like a face by adding googly eyes and some yarn for hair. You could also try a dainty heart by adding lace to the back of the heart. Make a crazy heart pin person by adding eyes and making arms and legs out of pipe cleaners. Or you could write your sweetheart a little message on your heart pin. Here are some suggestions:

  • Be mine!
  • I Love you!
  • Congratulations!
  • Happy Birthday/ Happy Mother's Day / Happy Anniversary

If you have use a lot of tiny decorations on your heart pin, consider applying a coat of clear shellac to the heart to help all of your decorations adhere and stay firmly in place. Make sure you give your newly-decorated heart pin enough time to dry. Try not to handle your heart pin too much as it is drying, since your fingers will dislodge your decorations and leave prints in your paint.

Step 4

Apply the pin backing. The last step when you make your own heart pin is to put on the pin itself. Using hot glue or crazy glue, apply a small amount of glue to the back of the pin. Quickly press this against the back side of your heart pin. Hold the pin firmly in place until the glue has a chance to dry and adhere.

Now your heart pin is complete and ready to give away to a loved one.
