A lockback knife is a type of knife that has a special feature. The knife has a device that allows the blade of the knife to securely lock in place when the blade is extended to its full length. To put the blade back in, you will have to release the locking device on the knife to release the lock. You can find different types of these lockback knives in stores or, you can make your own lockback knife!
Here are the steps on how you can make your own lockback knife:
- Gather materials. First, gather all the materials that you need for making the lockback knife. The materials are graphing paper, pencil, cardboard, knife, marker, sewing pins, saw, file, drill, wood, epoxy and sandpaper. Make sure all the materials are within reach so that you won’t have to look for them when you need them. If you do not have some of these supplies, you can go to your local hardware store and get them.
- Create the pattern. After you have already gathered all the materials, the next thing that you have to do is the pattern for the lockback knife. First, draw the shape of your knife on the graphing paper. The patterns that you are going to draw are for when the knife is folded and when the knife is extended to full length. Make sure that you include the tang of the knife on the pattern. The tang is the part of the knife that is in the handle. Draw a circle for the hole on the tang when you draw the pattern.
- Preparing the knife. After making the pattern, the next thing is to prepare the knife. Use the pattern that you made on the graphing paper and transfer it on a piece of cardboard. The thickness of the cardboard must be the same thickness as your knife blade. Put a mark on the places where the spring should be. Get the sewing pins and assemble the template according to how you will build the lockback knife.
- Making the lockback knife. The next step is to create the lockback knife. Use the template to guide you. Drill the holes on your knife where the pins are. Insert the spring on your knife and make sure that it fits and test to see if the spring mechanism works. Be careful when you test it as the blade may cut you. When the spring perfectly works, you already have your very own lockback knife.
Making your own lockback knife means having to do a lot of work. This is not an easy process, especially if you know nothing about knives and these mechanisms that are used. It is good to read and understand the instructions before you begin to familiarize yourself with the work that you are about to do. You can look at some samples of lockback knives online so that you can have a general idea on how the mechanism inside the knife works!
