A photography album, whether it is a memory album, a fashion album, or a simple collection of photography frames, is an excellent way of preserving and capturing certain events and memories in an organized manner. That said, albums do not have to be the boring, repetitive, unimaginative books of yesteryear.
Here's how to make your own creative photography album:
- Get organized. Before you begin making the album itself, consider your collection of photographs that you wish to organize. Are they numerous? Do they come from a few events, or several separate ones? Which type of album would you like to organize them in, one large bound album to contain all of the photographs, or several separate ones that are organized per event? Knowing your photographs will make it easier for you to determine which style would best suit your needs.
- Choose your materials. If you are making the album itself from scratch, it is important to find materials that will stand up to the pressure of constant handling and viewing. A handmade album has a certain charm to it that makes the extra effort worthwhile. Heavier materials are usually best for the front and back covers, such as cardboard or cloth-covered illustration boards. You could also just decide to get a hard binder, which will eliminate the need for punching holes and gathering binding equipment. For the inside of the pages, a good option is some heavy-duty stock paper, which will provide some protection to your photos against wrinkling and folding. Determine how many pages you will need for your album, and insert the pages in the binder or between the covers accordingly.
- Consider attachment. Once you have put together your basic book, the next step is to determine how you would like to attach the photos to the pages of your album. One common method is to use photo corners, which you can purchase from bookstores and stationery shops, and can easily be attached to your stock paper. One advantage of using photo corners is that they minimize damage to your photo and make it easy to move the photos around. The disadvantage is that they cannot be used for cutouts or cropped photos. Another option is to use simple album pages, which are not very creative or flexible, but are easy enough to use. Another option is just to use permanent glue or tape on stock paper, which increases your creative freedom but is more permanent than the other two options.
- Get creative. The next step is to design your album cover. This is a fun step that is also very important to your project, since the cover gives the viewer an idea of what is inside the album. There are endless options when designing your cover: you can make a collage, cover it with cloth materials, make themed cutouts that pertain to the contents of your photos, use pre-cut, store-bought accents and ribbons, recycled materials, anything that captures your fancy. Remember, this is your album, and you can be as creative with the cover as your imagination will allow.
Finally, it’s time to attach the photos! Be sure to organize them properly before you stick them on the pages, especially if you are using stock paper and glue. It always helps to lay them out chronologically before you begin attaching photos to your pages. Do not overcrowd the pages, as that will take the interest away from your photos.
