Need a pirate fancy dress costume? Follow these steps for a costume that is cheap and effective.

Creating a pirates costume yourself allows much more authenticity to the final result, something you can't buy in a shop.

Step 1:

Gather together images or photos of pirates. These may be of the captain or any of his crew. They all have a different look.

Step 2:

Go visit your local second hand shop and look for fabrics you have seen in your photos. Things like baggy trousers, shirts or tops with plenty of frills etc. Colors can be green, dark orange, black or brown. Tops are best in white, cream, red or blue. Make sure whatever you buy is one or two sizes bigger than what you need.

Step 3:

When you get the trousers home, shorten them by cutting them at the knee and don't hem them. Thick string or rope around the waist will be your belt. Roll shirt sleeves to the elbow and add a scarf or colored piece of fabric to tie around the waist.

Step 4:

Now add some black boots to your costume. Finalize with some trinkets like large chunky costume jewelry to add a bit of glitter.

The richness of your fabrics will add greatly to the overall effect.
