Use inexpensive, simple materials available at any craft supply store to make a charming hat for your little princess.
Gather your supplies.
- 13.5 X 22.5 inch piece of plastic canvas (Darice is a common brand)
- Wool felt, fleece, or other non-fraying fabric to cover the cone
- Tulle, netting, gauze or other flowing fabric for the streamers
- Buttons, gems, flowers, or other decorations
- Ribbon for chinstrap if not using same fabric as streamers
- White glue (such as Elmer’s or Aleene’s)
- Thread: sewing thread and cotton thread or yarn
Roll the canvas into a cone, using the corner of the canvas as the peak of the cone. Make sure that the edges meet but do not overlap. Use a marker to mark the excess canvas. Release the cone. Cut off the extra canvas.
Trim the marked edge, rolling up the cone occasionally to see how it looks. Cut a two square by two square notch out of the corner of the cone. The canvas should look similar to the canvas shown in the photo to the left.
Use the plastic canvas as a template. Mark the fabric with the outline of the canvas. Add two additional inches to the curved edge of the fabric -- this will be the hat band.
Glue the fabric to the canvas. Weight it down and let it dry.
Pull the extra hatband fabric over the raw edge of the canvas. Use needle and thread to sew it to the canvas. Make tucks as necessary to help the fabric lie smoothly.
Sew the cone together. Using the cotton thread/yarn, begin sewing the two long edges of the cone together. Start at the point of the cone. Make sure to align the squares and sew them square to square neatly. This will increase the sturdiness of the hat and ensure that the band is smooth where the seam meets.
Sew on the chinstrap. Cut two 18-inch to 2 foot lengths of either ribbon or mesh fabric for chinstraps.
Tack them firmly down on each side of the hat.
Cover the seam with mesh fabric. Cut a long strip (3-6 feet) of mesh fabric that is approximately 4-6 inches wide. Lay it along the seam of the hat with several feet extending beyond the cone and below the band.
Use buttons or gems to tack it in place along the seam so that you hide the seam and add decoration to the back of the hat.
Decorate the band of the hat with mesh fabric. Cut a long strip of mesh fabric (3-6 feet) that is 4-8 inches wide to wrap around the band of the hat. It will decorate the band as well as hide where the chinstraps have been tacked on, and it will finish the back streamers.
Tack the band in place using buttons, gems, flowers or other decoration.
Add streamers from the cone. Cut a long strip of mesh fabric (6-8 feet) that is 4-6 inches wide. Fold the length at the middle and tie a knot.
Run the loose ends up through the cone and out the top. Add more streamers if desired.
Embellished with more decorations or complete as is, you’ve got a princess hat fit for your most finicky royalty!
