You probably encounter Popsicle sticks on hot days when a cold treat is nothing short of wonderful. The Popsicle stick, however, serves many more purposes than keeping your frozen treats handy and easy to eat. Plenty of arts and crafts projects can be made using Popsicle sticks, and one of these is the Popsicle stick basket. Once the basket is completely dry, it is also very strong and can be used to keep small objects as well as to decorate your home. Here are the steps to creating your Popsicle stick basket.
- Make the base. Keep in mind that there are many ways to create baskets out of Popsicle sticks. The easiest type of Popsicle stick basket to create is the square basket. To create a simple square basket, you need to place two parallel Popsicle sticks in vertical position. Add a strip of glue on these strips. Place enough Popsicle sticks horizontally to cover the two Popsicle sticks. Make sure that only the ends of the horizontal Popsicle sticks touch the vertical bases. This will give you a panel.
- Add the sides. To create the sides, you can use the same procedures for making the base of the Popsicle sticks. You can, however, also use another method which involves stacking the Popsicle sticks. Making panels similar to the base will allow you to save up on Popsicle sticks, which can be handy especially if you are going to create a number of baskets. The advantage of stacking the sticks together, however, is that you create a thicker and stronger wall. To do this, simple add Popsicle sticks on two opposite sides of the base. Stack another pair on the alternate side. Use glue on the edges of the sticks which touch each other. Add enough sticks until you create the height that you need for your basket. You can create tall baskets that can act as vases for flowers. You can also create shorter ones that will allow you to easily access small items such as your cellular phone or portable music player.
- Add the handle. Finally, attach Popsicle sticks on alternate sides of the wall. This will be where the handle is attached. To attach the actual handle, drill a small hole into the top ends of the attachment sticks. Also drill two holes into the actual handle. This will allow you to use a piece of wire to connect the handle. You can reinforce the handle by using several Popsicle sticks glued together, which is especially important if you are going to regularly use your basket to carry load. You can also use hot glue if you want to speed up the drying process and to make the basket stronger.
Another way to create a Popsicle stick basket is to create a polygon base that will act as the top of the basket. Stack as many sticks as you want for the wall, and then proceed to taper the stack when you want to create the base. To close off the base, lay out a panel of sticks. Let the project dry and then invert this so that the closed off section will act as the base.
