How To Make Carnation Corsages

Traditionally, a woman wears corsages in a day that is special to her like the prom or a ball. The women close to the bride often wear corsages, too. There are two types of corsages. One is worn right below the left shoulder. The other is tied to the wrist. Corsages are made from different flowers. One flower often used for corsages is the carnation.

Carnations come in a myriad of colors and varieties. They look very delicate but are actually quite hardy. Carnations remain fresh looking even after a few hours of merry making.

Basic corsage worn on the bodice

To make the traditional corsage worn on the bodice, you will need the following materials:

  • 3 carnations
  • Filler flowers like baby’s breath
  • Matching ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Floral tape
  • Florist pick
  • Florist pin
  • Step 1 Create a bow using the ribbon. Wrap the ribbon around the base of your four fingers. Do this at least six to eight times. Carefully slip your fingers out of the looped ribbon. Twist the middle of the looped ribbon so it looks like a figure of eight. Wrap the wire of the florist pick around the middle of the looped ribbon. Secure it tightly. Separate each loop to create the bow. Make adjustments so you come up with a well balanced bow.
  • Step 2 Prepare the flowers. Cut the stems of the carnations and the filler flowers. Leave at least 2 inches of stems.
  • Step 3 Arrange the flowers. Bring together the three carnations. Arrange them in such a way that one carnation is slightly lower than the other. Add filler flowers to the spaces between and around the carnations. Use floral tape to secure the stems of the carnations and the filler flowers together. In case some of the flowers are too short to be wrapped with the others, attach a floral pick to the flower in order to give it a longer stem.
  • Step 4 Attach the flowers to the bow. Get the bow you made and place this under the arrangement of carnations. Wrap the flower stems and the florist pick of the bow together with floral tape. Add a floral pin under the wrapped stems. Now you have a basic carnation corsage.

Wrist corsage

For a wrist corsage, you will use the following:

  • 3 carnations
  • Filler flowers like baby’s breath
  • Scissors
  • Floral tape
  • Elastic lace
  • Tape measure
  • Needle and thread

Follow steps 2 and 3, preparing and arranging the flowers, in making the basic corsage above.

  • Prepare the elastic wristband. Use a tape measure to get your wrist’s circumference. Cut the elastic lace roughly half an inch shorter than this measurement. You want the wristband to hug your wrist so the corsage does not move. Sew the two ends of the elastic lace to create a circle.
  • Attach the flowers to the wristband. Sew the wrapped stems of the floral arrangement to the wristband using your needle and thread. Make sure to use small, straight stitches to ensure that the flowers are attached firmly to the band. Now you have your carnation wrist corsage.

These are two very simple ways of creating a carnation corsage. You can use other materials like netting and lace or additional flowers and foliage to make the corsage more special. When choosing your carnations, select colors that complement the dress of the person wearing the corsage. With the wide variety of carnations available, you will surely find more than one that will be perfect for the corsage.
