There are many ways of making cushions for your lawn chair, below is one of way. You only have to possess basic sewing skills to come up with beautiful cushions.
Measure the seat. Using a measuring tape, measure the seat of the lawn chair’s seat from front to back and then from side to side. In case you have a rounded seat, you can use pattern paper to make a template of the seat.
Cut the foam. Using the measurements of the seat, cut the foam according to this size. Once cut, measure it against the actual seat and trim if necessary.
Cut the fabric. Place the foam on your fabric (wrong side up). Using fabric pencil or chalk and a ruler, trace around the cut foam. Remove the foam. Draw a line that is 1” away from the original drawing. This is for the seam. Next, draw the cutting line. This line is drawn ½” away from the second line. Cut the fabric along the cutting line. Use this as a pattern when preparing the rest of the cut fabrics. There should be two pieces of fabric per cushion. If you have four lawn chairs, you should have 8 cut fabrics.
Sew the fabric. Get two pieces of fabric and pin them together with the wrong sides facing outside. Using a sewing machine, sew three sides of the two pieces together along the seam lines. One side should remain open. Remove the pins and turn the cushion cover inside out. Check to see that the corners are neat, not clumped. Place the foam inside the cushion.
Make adjustments. Fit the cushion on the seat to see if adjustments need to be made. If adjustments are necessary, remove the stitching and sew the cushion cover again.
Attach the Velcro strip. Sew the Velcro strips on the wrong side of the open part of the cushion cover. One side has the hook part of the strip while the other side has the loop side. Insert the foam again and close the Velcro.
Make the rest of the covers. Using the rest of the fabric, follow steps 4 – 6 to make the additional cushion covers.
Note: If you don’t want to make removable cushion covers, sew the opening of the cushion fabric with the foam inside without Velcro strips. You can even attach four sets of fabric strips to tie the cushions to the chairs.
