A doorknob hanger is not really an important requirement for having a great home, but it can be a fun way for kids to express themselves or for adults to share their thoughts without literally telling everyone about it. Though doorknob hangers are usually found in hotels with “Do not Disturb” messages, teens have made them interesting by adding quotes like “Enter at your Own Risk,” or “Unauthorized persons not Allowed.” Aside from these messages, you can also use doorknob hangers as decorations for upcoming festivities like Christmas and Halloween. If you want to know how to make one, here are the things you have to do.
- Make a template. Prepare a template for your doorknob hanger based on your use. If you have a lot of extra time, you can make different ones for decorations or for various messages you can post in your door throughout the year.
There are also a lot of templates that you can check out online if you’re not on the creative side. All you need is a paper and printer and you have your template on hand.
When making or printing a template, don’t forget to measure the door knob against the hole in the hanger so you know that the fit is right.
If you don’t have any readily printed template, trace a square on a piece of cardboard and get any type of circular object like a glass or cookie cutter that fits the size of your doorknob. Put the circular object on top of the rectangular shape, putting it on the center of the longer part of the rectangle. Trace the circle. To cut this inner circle, poke a small hole in the middle of the circle and insert the scissor blade through. Make a small snip until the edge of the circle and cut the hole completely.
- Prepare a fabric. Get a stabilizer fabric and trace the shape of your pattern on it. Tape the pattern over the fabric and smooth it out. Ensure that the edges are in place.
If getting the pattern online, you can print out the template on a sticker paper so you don’t have to worry about the type of adhesive to use.
Aside from fabric, you can also use a thin cardboard or poster board.
- Finish up. Let the paint and decoration dry first before testing the doorknob hanger. Make adjustments as necessary.
You can also make a double-sided doorknob hanger if you want, to save up on materials for messages you want to convey. Just make sure that the pattern fits your stabilizer fabric or cardboard, and the paint or decorations on the first side are dry and fixed before attempting to start the other one.
Use doorknob hangers for different locations like the library or in your office. You can also make them as gifts, or make a business out of making them as a promotional material or for an advertising campaign.
