How To Make Drawstring Bags

Drawstring bags are great projects for kids as they are easily made and not hard to teach. There are a lot drawstring bag patterns available online that you can use. If you want to know how to make drawstring bags, here are the things you need to do.

  • Prepare the materials. Get a sewing machine used for straight stitches, flexible cord, sewing tools, and an iron and ironing board.
  • Prepare the fabric. Prepare fabric for the bag. Cotton-polyester or cotton fabrics will do as they are easy to use and doesn’t stretch unnecessarily when being sewn. Determine the size of the bag that you want to make. Based on the size, you can use scrap fabrics from other projects. As a start, choose fabrics with simple colors or random designs rather than striped or pleated fabrics since you need to match ends while sewing.

You can prepare two sets of fabric, one for the bag exterior, and another one for the bag lining.

However, if you don’t have a pre-determined size, decide on this before cutting the fabric for the bag. You can either make a small bag for a purse, or a large one for books and clothes.

  • Cut the fabric. Cut the fabric based on the measurement you decided. Add an inch of extra measurement on all sides of the fabric before cutting. You need two pieces of each cut.

After cutting, iron the fabric pieces.

  • Position the fabric pieces. Place the two fabric pieces together, with the right sides on top of each. You can either draw a pattern on the fabric with a ruler and pencil, or make one out of newspaper and pin it to the fabric before drawing it. At this point, make sure that the corners of the fabric are straight and the edges are all lined together.

At this point, add the drawstring bag lining before proceeding to the next step.

  • Make the drawstring pockets. Make the upper hem on each fabric piece. Fold a margin over the hem from the upper part of the fabric, about two inches or so. Make sure that you measure each fold so that the fold on both fabrics is the same. Pin the seams then iron the fabric. Sew the seam closer to the hem, passing through both fabrics. Afterwards, iron the fabric again. Sew the second and third seams, with each one distanced half an inch from each other. Iron the fabric after sewing each seam.
  • Sew the bottom and side seams. Pin the fabric pieces with the right sides of the drawstring pockets on top of each other. Sew a seam on the bottom, measuring 5/8 inch from the bottom.

Sew the side pieces with the seam of the same distance as the bottom seam. Continue the side seam until you reach the bottom drawstring seam only, so that you can close the sides of the bag while still having the space to thread the drawstring through. Iron the fabric after sewing.

  • Finish the bag design. Cut diagonal lines from both edges of the bag bottom to make the corners smoother. You can add additional hems or zigzags to the bag sides to make the bag sturdier.

Turn the bag over so the right side of the fabric is facing outside. Iron the bag. Check the seams and bag bottom.

  • Insert the drawstring. Get the cord for the drawstring and cut two pieces, with the length of each piece double the bag’s width. Get a large safety pin and pin it on the end of one fabric before threading it through the first seam. Do the same for the other seam. Remove the pin once each cord is through the seams.

Tie a small knot on the edges of both cords. To close the drawstring, pull the end of the cord on the upper seam on one side, and the one on the lower seam on the opposite side. You can tie the two ends together to make a handle.

Once done, decorate your drawstring bag! Use paints for added design, or sew additional shapes or crafts from different colored fabrics to enhance the appearance of the bag.
