How To Make Foam: Kids' Science and Craft Activities

Check out This Fun Science Experiment

Making foam is one of the most fun and easy science projects for kids. It's a great activity to pass a rainy day afternoon. If you are looking for craft activities for kids, this should entertain them. If you want to create foam at home, all you need to do is gather a few common household items. Follow these steps to learn how.

2 tablespoons vinegar
2 tablespoons baking soda
1 tablespoon liquid dishwashing soap
2 tall shot glasses
Newspaper or plastic sheeting

  1. Cover your work area with newspaper. The foam will make a mess on your table so cover it with newspaper or plastic sheeting before you start this project.
  2. Pour vinegar into one shot glass. Start with the vinegar because it is the least reactive substance.
  3. Mix the baking soda and soap. Mix these two ingredients in the second shot glass. Stir lightly.
  4. Pour vinegar into the baking soda mix. Stand back when pouring the vinegar because once the two substances make contact you will have instant foam. The baking soda reacts with the vinegar to create carbon dioxide and the bubbles are combined with the soap to create thick foam.

Foam is a fun substance to create at home with the kids. If you need a quick science project or just something fun to do, then you can have it by following these steps. Easy and affordable kids' science activities may be hard to come by, but this doesn't take much effort to put together. Be prepared to spend some time cleaning up since the foam makes a big-time mess if not contained.

Have some fun with this project by mixing different colors of food coloring with the vinegar before you combine the ingredients into foam.
