Container candles have several advantages over pillar candles. They don't drip; if the container has a lid it contains the smoke when you blow it out; and they can hold stronger scents. A layered container candle can add beauty to any room, glowing different colors as the wick burns down through the candle. Here are some simple instructions to make a layered container candle.
What You'll Need
- a heat-proof container (glass works best for this project, so you can see the layers)
- base candle wax you can purchase at any craft store (the type made for container candles works best)
- pre-tabbed candle wick long enough to sit on the bottom of the container and reach at least two inches above the rim
- additives made specifically for candles (coloring, scents)
- small disposable loaf pans
- medium sauce pan with about two inches of water
- hot glue gun
- disposable drinking straw, cut shorter than the length of the wick
Directions
Divide the candle wax into portions according to the number of colors you'll want in your layered candle. Using one of the loaf pans and the sauce pan as a double-boiler, melt one portion of the wax over low to medium heat, then add the first color (and scent, if desired).
While the wax melts, thread the wick through the straw. Apply a drop of hot glue to the bottom of the wick's tab and use the straw to press it firmly to the center of the bottom of the container. Remove the straw and lay it across the mouth of the container. Wrap the free end of the wick around the straw and tape it in place to hold the wick straight and centered as you pour your candle layers.
Note: you may want to warm your candle container prior to pouring to prevent parts of the wax from pulling away from the container's sides as it cools. You can do this by placing it in a 150 degree F oven for a few minutes.
Carefully pour your first color into the container, taking care not to get any on the sides. Allow the layer to cool for about six hours. Repeat the process of melting, coloring, and pouring the next color. Allow the layer to cool, and continue until you've completed your layered container candle. Remember to leave enough space at the top for the wick, and a lid if the container has one. Trim the wick to ¼" and enjoy!
