How To Make Origami Poppers

An origami popper is a noise-maker made only with an ordinary piece of paper. This project works better when you use crisp paper with no holes on it as compared to using notebook papers with punched sides.

If you want to make a big origami popper, you can make use of newspapers. You will only need a piece of paper for this project, nothing else.

To know how you can make your own origami poppers, read the instructions below.

Working with a square paper:

  • Place the sheet of paper on a flat surface. Make sure that the long edge of the paper is facing you.
  • Get the top edge of the paper and fold it down to meet the bottom. Crease the paper firmly, and then unfold it.
  • Fold the other corners. Now that you have a crease on the center as basis, fold each of the other corners of your paper inward to meet that crease line.
  • Fold the sheet of paper in half to line up the pointed ends. Fold the paper in half, top to bottom.
  • Place your index finger in between the top two layers of the paper. Get the top flap and bring it straight up. Flatten it. This will form a diamond-shaped paper with one flat side.
  • Again, fold the paper in half, top to bottom. Hold the corner of the long edge nearest the flat edge of the diamond inside.
  • Raise the origami up, flap facing down. In a very quick motion, bring the popper down. The flaps will catch the air and will make the popping sound as the flaps open.
  • Working with a rectangular paper:
  • Work on a flat surface again. Place your sheet of paper on the surface. The short end should be towards you.
  • Fold the paper in half, top to bottom. Then, fold the sheet from side to side as well.
  • Hold the lower corners of the two inside flaps. Pull them a little bit out for better grip. Using your other hand, get a hold of the other two lower corners of the outer paper. You should be able to hold these flaps without holding you inner ones. Remove you hold from the inner flaps.
  • Place your index finger in between the top two layers of the paper. This will let you origami catch enough air for a better popping noise later.
  • Raise the origami up, flap facing down. In a very quick motion, bring the popper down. The flaps will catch the air and will make the popping sound as the flaps open.

For best results, choose a paper that is not too thin but not too sturdy as well. A crisp printer paper will do a good origami popper. Make sure you also crease all the folds correctly and firmly.

Remember, you should not pinch the flaps and flatten them before popping. There wouldn’t be enough air in the flaps to make it pop. Insert you index finger in between to widen the spaces.

Make as many poppers as you can and share it with your friends.
