How To Make Rosary Beads

One of the most symbolic pieces known in Christian culture are rosary beads. The rosary contains four separate prayers, known as, the "Hail Mary," the "Our Father," the "Apostle's Creed," and "Glory be to the Father." The purpose of the rosary is to pray for the salvation of mankind. It is an act of both celebration and sorrow, depending upon the occasion and the reason the person is praying.

Rosary beads can be usually purchased in specialty stores, however, one can create a beautiful homemade rosary with their own supplies. It takes only a few simple steps.

First, you need to gather your supplies. In order to make rosary beads, one will need to have a cross or crucifix. These can be either wooden or metal, depending on one's preference. Also, a rosary needs anywhere between 50 and 150 beads, depending upon the size of the rosary a person would like to make. To make a five Decade rosary, one will need 59 beads of different types of beads to differentiate between the prayers of the rosary. Lastly, one will need a strong, but thin string or wire to place the beads on.

To begin this process, one needs to string the cross through the wire. Remember to secure the cross with a knot to hold it in place. The next step is to string the first bead of the rosary through until it is pressed up against the cross. This bead represents the "Apostle's Creed" prayer, the first prayer of the rosary.

Next, tie another knot about 1/4 of an inch away from the first bead and string three beads of the same make on to the wire, again, securing them with a knot. These represent next set of prayers which is, in this order, an "Our Father" prayer, three "Hail Mary" prayers, and a ""Glory be to the Father" prayer. Repeat this process once more, and this will be the pattern that drapes on the bottom of the rosary.

Then, tie a knot about 1/4 of an inch away and string 10 rosary beads, tying them off with a knot. This is the completion of a Decade. The Decade is the representation of the 10 "Hail Mary" prayers. This is followed by another knot tied 3/4 of an inch away from the Decade. String a unique bead and tie it off with a knot. This is the Marker bead. The Marker bead represents the "Our Father" prayer in between the Decades. This process should be repeated four times to make a five Decade rosary.

All that is left to do, now, is to trim the rosary beads and tie off the finished five Decade set of rosary beads off with a knot.
