How To Make Silly Putty

Few things are more enjoyable for a child than to have a handful of a slimy, gooey substance that was provided by an adult! Silly putty offers children a really fun way to get messy without actually getting dirty. Here is a super simple recipe to create your own batch of silly putty for everyone in your household to enjoy.

Step 1

Gather your ingredients. In order to make this concoction, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 2 cups of glue
  • 1 cup of liquid starch
  • A mixing bowl
  • A stirrer
  • Food coloring (optional)

Step 2

Combine the ingredients. Start off by pouring the glue into the mixing bowl. If you are choosing to add any food coloring, it should be mixed in with the glue before anything else is added. From there, simply combine the liquid starch and the glue together, and stir until the mixture reaches a desirable consistency. Some batches require quite a bit of stirring, so don't worry if your mixture doesn't reach the perfect consistency right away. Adding more glue will make it wetter, while adding more starch will thicken the mixture up.

Step 3

Store your silly putty. Once the silly putty has been made and enjoyed, it should be kept in an airtight container or a zip-lock bag. Some people choose to keep it in the refrigerator to give it a cold feeling but that is not absolutely necessary.

Since this is such an easy recipe to make, it can usually be done along with the children for a fun family experience. Don't hesitate to include everyone in both the making and playing!
