Capture the flag is one of the more popular sports among high school children and young adults. The basic concept of capture the flag is that the players are separated into two teams. We'll call them red and blue. The field is divided in half so that each team has their own "territory" and in each zone is that team's "flag." The objective is for the red team to capture the blue team's flag before the blue team can capture the red team's flag and vice versa. Sounds simple, right?
Like any sport, capture the flag has a little more to it. The flag, which is usually just a colored piece of fabric, is located toward the back of each territory. Most often it is in plain sight. Because the game revolves around these flags, the goal of each team member is to protect their flag the best way they can.
So just how do teams protect their flag in capture the flag? It's easy. All they have to do is tag the players from the other team. When the red team is in their territory it means they're safe. This means that the blue team cannot tag them and send them to jail. If a red member crosses over into blue territory to get the flag, however, then a blue team member just needs to tag them and that person is sent to "jail."
In capture the flag, the jail is located on the very left-hand side of the field. It usually consists of just a line of players that have been tagged that are slightly outside the territory. So when the red team member gets tagged, he/she will go to the jail on the blue team's territory. The only way to bust a person out of jail is if one of his/her teammates crosses into the other team's territory and tags their hand without being tagged themselves. For this reason, it would be wise for the blue team to keep watch over the red player in jail so that no other players tag them.
The game ends as soon as one team succeeds in capturing the opposing team's flag and brings it back to their own territory without being touched.
Sounds fun, right? Now that you know the rules, get out there and gather some friends to play capture the flag! Remember, you're in it to have fun!
