You must probably be thinking that folio scrabble is another scrabble game. So, what’s the difference between this and the common scrabble? Folio scrabble is like your portable gaming board. That is why it is called “folio” scrabble. It's like having a folder for your scrabble game. Everything you need to play scrabble is included in a bring-it-everywhere game folio.

Folio scrabble is played just like your common scrabble, only that you will have smaller racks, a smaller board, and smaller tiles. Scrabble is played by at least two to as much as four players. The goal is to form words vertically or horizontally using the different tiles of the game. But the words that players can create are only limited to those that can be formed using at least one letter that is already on the board.

Here’s how a normal scrabble game is played:

  1. The players have to agree on the dictionary to use. This dictionary will be like your little helper when deciding whether a certain word is acceptable or not.
  2. Each player has to pick seven tiles. But the players should pick without looking which letter to get. To do this, tiles are usually faced down or put in a lid box before anyone can pick their seven tiles.
  3. Each player will begin to form words while the first player puts the first word on the scrabble board. The first word should include the red star square on the board. The player can choose any word as long as it contains at least 2 letters.
  4. Players should maintain 7 letters sitting on their racks. That is why they have to pick tiles after every one of their turns.
  5. The score should be recorded every time the player has put down his word for his turn.
  6. The player with the highest score wins.

It is important that the folio scrabble materials follow these rules:

  1. The scrabble board should have a total of 225 cells, which is 15 rows and 15 columns. Each of these cells should have a size to fit the tiles.
  2. There should be a total of 100 scrabble tiles. Two of these tiles are blank while the remaining 98 tiles have a letter on each of them.
  3. Each tile has its corresponding value. Blank tiles have no point while one point is given to A, E, I, O, U, L, N, R, S, and T. Letters D and G have two points each while the P, M, C, and B have three points each. Letter K is given 5 points, 8 points for J and X, and 10 points for Q and Z.

The score will depend on the summation of the word’s letter points. For example, the word DOG will earn 5 points. The player can earn bonuses if the letters were placed on the multiplying cells or if he was able to use all of the seven tiles he has on the rack. Search on the web for the complete points system, rules, and helper articles when playing scrabble.

You may want also to practice with software scrabble, like Scrabble Blast, before buying a folio scrabble set. Scrabble Blast is freeware, anyway.  Various sites on the web can provide you with other free scrabble software if this product does not appeal to you.
