Hopscotch is a popular children’s game that is played on many playgrounds worldwide. This is a game that was designed to help children with their balancing skills as well as their counting skills. Children as young as 3 years old can experience the fun of playing hopscotch. The object and rules for the game are very simple.
Hopscotch can be played alone or with a group of friends. There are many variations used for making the hopscotch grid. Here is one way for example.
- First, you want to choose a section of payment that is flat and also smooth.
- You would then take some chalk and start off by drawing one square box and write the number 1 inside.
- Above that box, you would draw two more boxes that would connect with the top box. Write in the numbers 2 and 3, respectively.
- Above those boxes, draw one square box and write in the number 4.
- Then, you would draw two more square boxes above the number 4 box and write in numbers 5 and 6, respectively.
- You would keep up this pattern until you get to the number 10.
- The number 10 box should be in a single square box like the numbers 1, 4, and 7.
- The numbers 8 and 9 should be in the square boxes that are side by side.
To play the game hopscotch, the player takes either a rock or a beanbag to be used as a marker and throws it into the number 1 square. The player will then hop over square 1 and will continue hopping into all of the squares until he/she reaches the number 10 square. All hops are done with one foot unless it is a double square. In this case, the player will use both feet to hop down. Once the player gets to the number 10 square, they must turn around and hop back. This time, once the player reaches the square with the marker, they must bend down to pick up the marker on the way back.
Some rules of the game are that you cannot lose your balance, and while hopping you must always use the single foot that you started out using. For the next turn, the second player does the same thing, or if the first player is playing alone, he/she will need to throw the marker and try to land it in square 2. The game continues until square 10 is reached. The player risks losing his/her turn if they do not hit the correct square with the marker, if they forget the hop over the square with the marker in it, or if they were to lose their balance. The first person to complete the course with a marker on each square will ultimately win the game!
