There are two versions of the Penny Drop game: one for children and one for adults.

The game for children revolves around pennies being tossed into a bucket of water.  The object of this game is to completely cover the quarter at the bottom of the bucket with pennies.  The player who tosses the one penny that completely covers the quarter wins the game and he or she will get the prize.  The prize is usually all the pennies in the bucket, plus the quarter - not bad earnings for a child!

The adult version of the Penny Drop game is a bit more complicated and far more dangerous than the kids' game.  The adult game involves alcohol and lots of drinking.  This game first became popular on college campuses over the past few decades has been a common pledge week game.

Lots of ammunition (pennies) is needed to participate, but the game itself is simple enough: players toss pennies into a glass of wine or another alcoholic beverage.  If you are successful with your toss, the person into whose drink you tossed the penny has to finish the drink.  If you miss on your attempt to toss the penny in the beverage, then you must finish that drink yourself.  Also, if you happen to toss a penny into someone’s glass and there is already a penny there  - in other words, someone beat you to the, um, punch - you must consume the entire drink.

As you can tell, in the adult Penny Drop game there is really no prize.  Again, this game is played on college campuses, so at worst most players end up stumbling back to their dorms.  If you are off-campus and intend to play the Penny Drop game, it is absolutely necessary to have a designated driver. Non-drinkers can also participate just for the fun of it; of course, they will substitute water or juice.  The non-drinker is usually invited to the game just to add another body or two, which enhances the suspense of the game.  More often than not, 97% of the participants are drinkers.  So have fun, but be safe!
