Photography has received a resurgence of interest in the past few years, thanks to the advancements made in camera technology. Today’s newer digital cameras have all but revolutionized the way we take pictures. Everywhere you look, it’s as if there’s a new, aspiring photographer being born. But one thing that will continue to remain as elusive as the perfect wave is the perfect family photograph. As strange as it may sound, millions of people still go through the days, year in and year out, without that one perfect family photograph. If you are one of those people I’m talking about, here are a few tips to help you stage the perfect family photograph.

First, inform your family of family photograph day well ahead of time. There’s nothing better than good preparation, and as you know by now, the last thing you want is a family photograph featuring people who just rushed downstairs, got dressed in a hurry, and are thinking that they just want to get this over with. If you have fidgety little kids in the family, what you’ll want to do is keep reminding them about family photograph day several days in advance. Make them excited about the day, and they will eventually see that this might not be the best time to throw a fit or a tantrum.

If you are using a digital camera, remember to always take multiple shots. Chances are that you won’t consume the entire memory card with so many takes, so be sure to take as many as you can. The best thing about having these new cameras is that you can review the shots right after you take them, so you can delete the ones you don’t want immediately. Factor in the basic truth that people will always blink, regardless of the situation they are in. Taking more shots will reduce the chance that you will end up with a family photograph where everyone’s eyes are closed.

You are also going to want to check your camera’s LCD screen for any defects, which could lead to discoloration on the screen. If your camera’s LCD is busted, it won’t reflect what the picture really looks like. Of course, when reviewing pictures, nothing beats the detail that your desktop PC and working LCD monitor can provide.

Bear in mind that when you are framing the picture, you will want everyone in the right poses as well. Try to ensure that each individual is properly represented in the picture. Practice the poses that you will want your family members to make. Once you have the right symmetry and blocking, set the camera to take multiple shots, leave it on a stable tripod and get into position with the rest of your family. Make sure that everyone is in the right place, and you can also try teaching them how to time their smiles as the camera clicks away. Keep these things in mind and you will definitely end up with the kind of family photograph that you have always wanted.
